Abstract

The article deals with the issue of statistical analysis of gaps in teaching English to high school students with a focus on the preparation of the NMT. The regulatory and legal framework of the documents that regulate the NMT is outlined, in particular: the Law of Ukraine «On Education» (2017); Law of Ukraine «On Higher Education» (2014); Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 931 of July 9, 2019 «On approval of the Regulation on the procedure for external independent assessment and monitoring of the quality of education»; «Order of the Ukrainian Center for Evaluation of the Quality of Education". Statistical data collected by the analytical portal «Word and Deed» in the period from 2022 to 2024 regarding the number of registered participants for the main session of the NMT in Ukraine are given. A number of factors have been identified that contribute to the emergence of difficulties in the acquisition of knowledge of the English language by Ukrainian graduates of the 11th grade. The diagnosis of the satisfaction of high school students in the teaching of English in schools with a focus on the preparation of the NMT was carried out. Diagnostics that contained 7 questions with multiple answer options, such as: «What do you see as the importance of learning English?»; «How did you prepare for taking the NMT?»; «What results did you get from NMT?»; «Are you satisfied with the results obtained from NMT?»; «What, in your opinion, had the greatest impact on your NMT scores?»; «In your opinion, what is the biggest inconsistency of the program content of the NMT with school curricula?»; «How would you rate the degree of difficulty of the 2024 NMT in English?». It has been proven that the main reasons for the gaps in teaching English to high school students with a focus on writing the NMT are: the inconsistency of the program content of the NMT with the school curriculum, which in turn affects the insufficient necessary amount of grammatical structures and lexical material for the successful completion of the NMT (some topics, or lexical material that was presented at the NMT was not considered at school at all).
