Abstract
The article delves into an urgent issue of the theory and methodology of professional education i.e. the formation of English language communicative competence of the students of non-philological specialities using content and language integrated learning method (CLIL). Having analyzed numerous existing studies about the CLIL method the authors specify some of their fundamental theoretical principles and ideas in the context of professional training of specialists. In reference to the formation of the student English language communicative competence in their professional areas, the authors suggest certain conditions of the efficiency of the CLIL method. It is pointed out that the content and language integrated method should be employed when the current level of students English language mastery enables them to take part comfortably in all types of communicative activities i.e. presumably at the final stages of the Bachelor course and all through the Master programme. The article puts forward and substantiates the thesis that for a narrow specialization it will be reasonable to combine the CLIL method with other approaches to teaching English with special purposes. The article defines a few more conditions of CLIL method efficiency, such as: the employment of reading professional literature in order to master professional terminology and stimulation of English language oral and written communication based on professional topics; the use of modern digital resources and technologies which is supposed to activate professional communication of students, the organization of their independent study and project work. The use of interactive forms based on modelling real communicative situations, which reflects professional activities of future specialists, corresponds with basic principles of the CLIL method and thus should be viewed as its significant and integral complement. In the context of the CLIL method, it is argued in favour of the necessity of systematic review of grammar and vocabulary topics as well as activation of corresponding communicative skills as an integral component of the formation of English language communicative competence in a professional sphere.
