Abstract
The article, which is the first part of a lengthy study of the ethno-confessional dimension of the history of the Roman Catholic Church in our territory, highlights that a key feature of Roman Catholicism in Ukraine is its association primarily with the Polish ethnic group. However, a gradual increase in the number of Ukrainians within the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) remains a steady trend. The article outlines the stages of Roman Catholicism’s development in Ukraine. From the adoption of Christianity in its holistic form (9th century) to the Polish-Lithuanian conquest of Ukraine, Polish-Ukrainian international and interfaith relations retained certain elements of loyalty. However, with the formation of the Polish-Lithua-nian Commonwealth, the spread of Catholicism in Ukraine gradually lost its natural character and, under political influence, took on expansionist features. For the Polish people, the war over Ukraine was justified by the need for territorial expansion.By the mid-17th century, the previously respected RCC in Ukraine began to be seen by Ukrainians as the center of spiritual violence. Following the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at the end of the 18th century, the RCC on Ukrainian lands within the Russian Empire underwent a significant transformation – shifting from the dominant denomination in the Commonwealth to a “tolerated” one. As a state-controlled church, after the Polish uprising of 1863, it maintained this status until 1918. The mass conversion of Uniates (Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church believers) to Roman Catholicism after 1905 marked the beginning of a new phase in the “de-Polonization” of the church.During the Soviet era, as noted in the article, three waves of anti-Catholic terror in the 1930s and 1940s forced Catho-lics to go underground. It was only in the late 1980s, on equal footing with other denominations, that the RCC began its path to revival, with the ethnic factor noticeably losing its dominant significance.
