Abstract

The article provides an overview of the theoretical foundations of electronic tests and presents the author's own practical developments in teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language. It analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of using the simple and effective tools offered by the Google Forms cloud service to create a set of educational electronic tests, which enable the diversification and modernization of the educational process. The specific features of test-based assessment in teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language are identified. The article describes closed-form test tasks (such as alternative choice, multiple choice, cross-choice, and ordering tasks) and open-form tasks (with restricted and free-form answers). Special emphasis is placed on test tasks designed for Ukrainian language instructors of foreign students, in alignment with the requirements of the Law of Ukraine «On Higher Education», particularly regarding the development of Ukrainian language competencies among international students as a necessary condition for professional training in Ukraine. The author examines the strengths and weaknesses of each type of test task in Ukrainian language classes for foreign students, with particular attention given to the cloze test, which fosters not only language proficiency but also understanding of extralinguistic contexts. Test tasks promote interactive engagement among participants in the educational process, enhance the effectiveness of language learning, accommodate individual needs and abilities, and ensure continuity and independence in learning. The examples of test tasks using Google Forms illustrate the interactive nature of this approach, enhancing both the effectiveness and autonomy of learning. Although test-based assessment can successfully fulfill the goals and functions of evaluation, it should be combined with other traditional forms of assessment (oral responses, written assignments, exams) to achieve educational objectives fully, as only a comprehensive approach ensures the successful attainment of educational goals.
