Abstract

This article discusses the initial attempts to integrate certain elements of STEM education into the educational process of 10 private Montessori-based preschools. Both the STEM and Montessori systems share similar goals and objectives, allowing them to be used complementarily. While the Montessori system focuses on the development and education of children from birth to 18 years, our research primarily aims to incorporate STEM education elements—typically designed for primary school—into the learning and upbringing of preschool children within Montessori groups. Introducing STEM elements in preschool education could enhance their effectiveness in primary school. This approach may be particularly appealing to educational institutions that combine preschool and primary education. In this article, we also address the challenges we encountered during the initial stages of implementing this innovation, the solutions we applied, and their outcomes. The most significant challenge was the lack of awareness among the 26 preschool educators involved in the project regarding STEM technologies. We tackled this issue by organizing training sessions on STEM principles and technologies. However, this training did not fully prepare them for implementing the innovation. Immediately after the training, teachers were asked to respond to a reflective survey. The results revealed a relatively high level of anxiety related to the innovation’s introduction. This issue was partially mitigated by psychological training. Another challenge was the inconsistency in educators’ approaches across different preschools. This was evident in the significant variation in the content and complexity of developmental exercises used in different institutions. To address this, we propose developing an integrated curriculum for preschool education and development—"STEM-Montessori"—which remains a work in progress.
