This article explores the historiographical interpretations and ideological influences surrounding a bilingual legal document from 1404, issued in Medyka, concerning a land dispute in the Polish king’s Ruthenian lands. The document, written in both Latin and Ruthenian, has been subject to varying scholarly descriptions, often influenced by the prevailing national narratives of the time. The study highlights how historians from different periods—especially from the 19th and early 20th centuries—framed the document’s language and significance, sometimes prioritizing one version over the other for ideological reasons. Through a critical analysis of past publications, the author demonstrates how historical interpretations can be shaped by the biases of their time, affecting the perceived status of languages, political affiliations, and regional identities in Central and Eastern Europe. The paper ultimately calls for a more objective and meticulous approach to historical source analysis, emphasizing the need to recognize and account for ideological influences in historiography.
