Abstract

The article highlights the problem of developing socio-emotional skills in the process of compensating for educational losses of students of general secondary education institutions at Ukrainian language lessons. The results of the international Study of Social and Emotional Skills (SESS) in Ukraine (2022–2024) are presented. It is emphasized that the process of developing socio-emotional skills requires creative thinking from a teacher-linguist, the ability to provide the necessary level of interactivity, and support students' cognitive interest, which will contribute to proper motivation for learning, creating significant opportunities for compensating for educational losses. The importance of socio-emotional (soft) skills for the formation of proper motivation for learning is explained, the importance and feasibility of developing such skills in the process of compensating for educational losses is emphasized, and the need for their development at Ukrainian language lessons is substantiated. In particular, the focus is on tasks that can include conversations, debates, discussions in pairs or groups, interviews, etc., contributing to the development of students' attention, emotional intelligence, and constructive communication skills. It is found that an important condition for language learning should be social interaction, in the process of which students communicate, exchange thoughts and impressions, express feelings, solve problems together, and master social values.
