Abstract

The article investigates the possibilities of forming the key competence ‘environmental literacy and healthy life’ of pupils of grades 5–6 through the use of the artistic word in the lessons of modern Ukrainian literature. The article substantiates the relevance of integrating environmental issues into the educational process as one of the priority tasks of modern education, especially in the context of growing environmental challenges associated with both anthropogenic factors and the consequences of martial law in Ukraine. The role of literary works in the development of environmental awareness and emotional sensitivity to environmental problems is revealed. As an example of a contemporary literary text, the book by Halyna Tkachuk “The Book of Garbage” is analysed, which contributes to the formation of stable value orientations in students regarding environmental protection. Effective methods of integrating environmental issues into the lesson structure are proposed: conversation, project activities, group work, creative tasks, games. The article also emphasises the importance of the role of the teacher as an agent of environmental education, capable of forming an active life position and awareness of personal responsibility in students. The perspectives for further research on environmental literacy through an interdisciplinary approach, integration of the content of literary works with the natural sciences and organisation of environmental extracurricular activities are outlined. The article may be useful for teachers of Ukrainian literature, methodologists, curriculum developers and anyone interested in forming the environmental awareness of the younger generation.
