Abstract
This article is dedicated to the comparative analysis of the peculiarities of the English language teaching at higher education institutions of Ukraine and the European Union. It examines the main trends in the globalization of the English language that influence approaches to its teaching, particularly the unification of language education and the integration of modern technologies into the learning process. The authors emphasize key aspects that determine the quality of language training, such as teaching methodology, teacher’s role, application of the European standards (CEFR), academic mobility, and the level of funding for educational programs. The study demonstrates that Western European countries generally have a more developed system of the English language teaching due to early language learning, the extensive use of modern methods and technologies, and high students’ motivation. At the same time, in Eastern European countries, particularly Ukraine, disparities in teaching quality are observed, caused by insufficient funding, a shortage of qualified instructors and limited integration of innovative methodologies. The analysis of curricula from leading universities in the EU and Ukraine indicates that European educational institutions place greater emphasis on developing communicative competence and the practical use of language. In contrast, Ukrainian universities predominantly follow a traditional approach focused on grammar and translation; however, a gradual introduction of modern teaching methods has been observed in recent years. The article also explores issues related to unequal access to quality language education and the impact of academic mobility on student training. It has been concluded that the further improvement of the English language teaching in Ukraine is possible through expanding international cooperation, modernizing curricula and strengthening the role of instructors as mentors in the educational process.
