Abstract

The article is devoted to a new interpretation of the term ‘slang’ and outlining its difference from jargon, interjargon and argot. The material for the scientific research was more than 80 sociolectic units selected from texts of various genres of Ukrainian electronic and print media of the early twenty-first century, from lexicons of sociolectic words, as well as from the most authoritative explanatory lexicographical works. The main sources of replenishment and enrichment of slang are identified and analysed: computer, military, transport, sports, youth jargon, as well as thieves' and criminal argot.
