Abstract

The article analyses conceptual and thematic peculiarities of the literary and artistic journal “Veselka”, around which a whole galaxy of masters of the artistic word rallied. The journal helped the creative growth of not only talented writers, but also skilful illustrators, who later decorated a number of Ukrainian publications with their ornaments and covers. The rather short (only one and a half years) publishing history of the journal “Veselka” turned out to be sufficient for acquiring the significance of a literary forum, open to constructive discussions and articulation of new ideas that were born in the minds of its creators and the closest circle of like-minded readers. Despite all the difficulties, this journal continued to remain thematically diverse: plays, stories, novellas, essays, poems were printed on its pages; articles and reviews were also published there. Additionally, translated works and samples of poetic creativity often appeared in the columns of “Veselka”. The journal became a model of the development and evolution of publishing in the cantonments, as its publishers accepted all the comments that were expressed by readers regarding the content of the press that was circulated in 1921. Throughout its existence, the journal did not experience any pressure from censorship or the authorities. The editors were free to choose the direction and nature of their publications. In addition, the editorial board published submitted materials even when they did not completely agree with the author’s opinion. To expand the readership, the journal’s editors provided a variety of information (news from Ukraine, cantonment chronicles, bibliography, etc.), but the main goal of founding “Veselka” was to create art for the sake of art. The journal united around itself artists who drew inspiration not from their surroundings, but from their inner selves, embodying their vision of the world in original works of art.
