Abstract
Research topicality. It is highlighted that from the level of «well-known» (intellectual inquiries of society), due to the unique collision of texture types and diverse styles in M. Skoryk’s piano music i.e., the author’s technique of combining intentionally incompatible elements, he managed to reach the level of the «universal», the absolute. A similar compositional principle was used by other XXth century masters, such as: Ch. Ives (most notable are composition exercises for his own son: selecting an accompaniment to a melody in a different key, writing polytonal canons and fugues, whole-tone pieces; tuning the piano in quarter tones), A. Berg (collages of folk and J. S. Bach’s music in the Violin Concerto «To the Memory of an Angel», 1935), D. Shostakovich, B. A. Zimmerman, L. Berio (in «Sinfonia», 1969), A. Schnittke (in the «Suite in the Old Style» for violin and piano, 1972). The tendency to combine diverse factors is also typical of the life and work of G. Crumb («technical expansion» of music possibilities, «graphic» design of his scores, bringing it to «instrumental theatre»), D. del Tredici (based on serial technique but using tonal structure, even to the manifestation of neo-romanticism) etc. However, as compared to the life and work of Myroslav Skoryk, none of the composers revealed the creative ability to a new type of universalization, both in the cultural-philosophical and life-creative aspects, so fully as the polytexture, appearing as an aesthetic category. Research techniques. The research was conducted using a comprehensive approach, implemented through the combination of biographical-cultural and stylistic-performance methods. Major findings and conclusions. The research shows that successful performance of Myroslav Skoryk’s piano works depends not only on whether the interpreter can feel the overall emotional tension inherent in the musical material’s meaning, not just situationally reveal the specifics of all the components of psychological boiling or conversely calming (the ability to perceive), but also on the maximum focus on (the ability to incorporate): - the richness and significance of Skoryk’s piano texture and polystylism, which characterize the essence – manner, the strength – delicacy, the complexity –simplicity, the majority – minority, and the specificity of music in general i.e., the sound of his amazing piano creative heritage; - the combination in one person of Myroslav Skoryk of a composer, musicologist, teacher, participant of multiple concert performances as a conductor and pianist, and editor of forgotten or unfinished works of Ukrainian classics; - the use in piano creativity of a wide range of genres – the cycles of piano pieces (programmatic – «In the Carpathians»; polyphonic – «Partita No. 5», «Six Preludes and Fugues»; didactic – «From the Children’s Album»), miniatures («Blues» etc.), expanded medium forms («Burlesque», «Toccata», «Rondo»), sonata, variations, paraphrases of orchestral music (on themes from G. Puccini’s opera «Madam Butterfly» for piano solo, the cycles of piano duets «Three Extravagant Dances», «Three Jazz Pieces»), paraphrases of works by other composers who wrote for piano («Jazz Paraphrases of L. Beethoven’s Works» for four hands), piano versions of Skoryk’s film music/music for a theatre («Melody» for piano solo, a suite of three pieces based on the dramatic poem by L. Ukrainka «The Stone Host»), three piano concerts with orchestra.
