Abstract

The article analyzes the peculiarities of the production of toponymic ergonyms in Kyiv. The semantic types of motivated word are analysed. Attention is drawn to the fact that among the ergonyms transonymised from toponyms the names of organisations, enterprises, educational and entertainment establishments predominate. It has been established that the the bases-motivators are astionyms, souveronyms, urbanonyms (hodonyms, quartalonyms), continentonyms, hydronyms, oronyms, rayononyms, catoyconyms, regionyms, oikodonyms, commonyms, mythonyms, and fictional toponyms. The hierarchy of semantic factors influencing the realisation of their derivational capabilities is identified. It has been determined that the majority of derived toponyms motivate units of the Kyiv toponymicon or those indicating the state affiliation of institutions, since these names primarily perform an informative function, geographically identifying the object. It is claimed that ergonyms for designating objects outside Kyiv and our country perform a suggestive function. Such names create associations with the traditions or authority of a particular region, city or country. Attention is drawn to the fact that the investigated ergonyms are formed mainly by lexical-syntactic method, that is, they are fixed phrase. Polynomial names (with 4 or more components) and two-component dominate. А common method of creating toponymic ergonyms is transonymisation, i.e. the use of other categories of onymes to name objects. A significant number of lexemes are formed by abbreviation and word composition. Syllable-word abbreviations prevail. Occasionally, names that are compound and mixed abbreviations, as well as those formed by stemming, occur. The author describes various graphic representations of names, which contribute to the implementation of the advertising function of ergonyms, namely: expressive orthography, the Latin alphabet for Ukrainian words and the Cyrillic alphabet for borrowed words, graphic hybridization (the use of dual scripts — Cyrillic and Latin), and graphic wordplay. It has been observed that, such techniques as occasional word formation with deviations from orthographic norms, rhyming, and historically-oriented renaming referring to the pre-Soviet period.
