Abstract

The article addresses the issue of university students’ cognitive orientation formation towards learning a foreign language within the modern educational environment characterized by the active implementation of information and communication technologies (ICT). Foreign language proficiency is considered not only a component of personal cultural development but also an integral part of professional competence. Emphasis is placed on the psychological aspects of the educational process – namely, intrinsic motivation, cognitive interest, and conscious need for speech activity in a foreign language – as key factors ensuring successful language acquisition. Various national and international researchers’ approaches to structuring cognitive orientation are analyzed, with the main components highlighted: motivational, informational, operational, personal, and reflective. Particular attention is given to the authors’ proposed structural model, which includes four interrelated components: motivational-value, cognitive, practical-activity-based, and reflective-evaluative. Each is substantiated in the context of foreign language learning enhanced by ICT. Their role in fostering students’ autonomy, reflection, speech activity, and learning motivation is detailed. The proposed structure integrates both internal (psychological) and external (educational and organizational) determinants of cognitive activity. The study demonstrates that cognitive orientation development is a crucial prerequisite for students’ effective professional and personal advancement. The suggested model may serve as a foundation for building a comprehensive pedagogical system of goal-oriented language instruction. Further research perspectives involve developing criteria, indicators, and levels for assessing this quality’s formation amid the digital transformation of higher education
