Abstract
The article presents a comparative analysis of an empirical study results of the hierarchy of life values of university students (aged 17-18) and their parents. Significant differences and some coincidences in research participants’ priorities were revealed. In particular, the following key differences were established. For students, the main priority is material well-being, this indicates the desire of the younger research participants for financial independence and material stability as basis of security and comfort in modern reality. At the same time, family well-being (the second position) and preservation of strength and health (the third position) are also important for them, although in lower positions compared to material goods. On the contrary, parents put family well-being in the first position and the preservation of strength and health has also high priority (the second position) while material wealth is only in the third position. It was shown that parents were more focused on a good, prestigious job (the fourth position) and maintaining order and stability in society (the sixth position against the eighth for children). For children, prestigious work is less important (the sixth position) than for parents. However, for them intellectual and creative self-realization (the fourth position against the fifth for parents) are more important.as well as the opportunity to utilize democratic rights and freedoms (the fifth position against the seventh for parents). It was found that both groups demonstrated a low significance of the value of respect from other people and social recognition, which might indicate certain devaluation of external approval in modern society or a transition to internal sources of motivation. It was concluded that in both groups there was a dominance of adaptation values, although the content of this group of values had significant differences. In the group of socialization values, both students and their parents value family well-being the most, but for parents this value has much greater weight. The most noticeable differences are manifested in the group of individualization values, which is the least pronounced for both groups.
