Abstract

The objective of the article is to highlight the methodological foundations of compiling and testing the textbook Switch Over. Part 4. Study Guide to Translation and Interpretation as a modern resource for translator training in higher education. The study focuses on identifying its underlying principles, analyzing the outcomes of its practical implementation, and outlining its potential in the context of developing translation competence. The methods employed include the analysis of contemporary approaches to teaching translation, comparative study of Ukrainian and international methodological contributions, classroom observation, student surveys, and comparative testing. The findings of the textbook pilot testing, conducted among senior-year students, confirmed its efficiency. It was established that the structure, built on the principles of communicativeness, authenticity, integration, and gradual complication, fosters the development of both written and oral translation skills. Studying materials in the Lead-in, Translation Warm-up, Use of Language, Interpretation, Translation, Study Skills, and Self-study Activities sections stimulates analytical thinking, enhances the ability to work with culture-specific vocabulary, and fosters terminology competence. Comparative testing revealed significant progress: the percentage of students with advanced written translation skills increased from 45% to 72%, and oral translation proficiency rose from 31% to 64%. The study concludes that the textbook is not only a practical teaching tool but also a part of the series Study Guide to Translation and Interpretation, created for consistent use throughout the four years of translator training. This concept ensures a systematic development of translation competence from the basic to the professional level. Areas for improvement include expanding oral translation exercises, introducing online components, and integrating interdisciplinary tasks. Therefore, the study confirms that Switch Over. Part 4. Study Guide to Translation and Interpretation represents an innovative and practically significant methodological complex that meets the requirements of modern professional education and fosters the training of competitive translators in the globalized educational and professional environment.
