Abstract
The approaching 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the military challenges of the 21st century have caused increased interest in the history of the past tragedy. In this sense, the authors have studied the prehistory of the beginning of World War II, the secret diplomacy associated with the Munich Agreement. The article reveals the real plans of Nazi Germany for aggression in Central and Eastern Europe, analyzes the policy of appeasement of A. Hitler, and emphasizes the tragic consequences of this policy for the security architecture of Europe and the world. The article examines the position of the main world players: Great Britain, France, the USA, the USSR, Germany around the Czechoslovak crisis. The article explains why the name of the German city of Munich became a shameful symbol of surrender to the audacious aggressor and betrayal of its allies. The authors of the article reveal the political and diplomatic practices of the Nazis, which were built on the principles of blackmail, deception, intimidation, various ideological deceptions, based on the slogans of «returning historical justice» or recognizing Germany’s own «glorious historical past». The publication examines in detail the precursors of the Munich Agreement, the political, international and ideological preconditions that facilitated the implementation of the Nazis’ aggressive plans. Using the reconstruction of historical events, the authors tried to explain the reasons why, despite the approach of world war, it was not possible to create a system of collective security in Europe that woul resist the fascist forces. The presented article expands the understanding of the need to use collective political, diplomatic and military measures to prevent wars and violence. The historical material covered in the publication helps to better understand why the Munich issue lingers in the offices of modern politicians and diplomats in the face of current military challenges. The article encour- ages reflection on the political and moral lessons of the 20th century.
