In 2022, the United Nations recognized Türkiye as the official international spelling of the country’s name, replacing “Turkey”. Despite this change, academic databases and journals continue to use the old spelling after 2022, and this has created inconsistencies in scholarly indexing and impacts the ability to search and retrieve relevant literature. This study examines the extent to which indexed academic publications have adopted the updated name and assesses the implications of this inconsistency for bibliometric analysis, using data from the Web of Science and Scopus, before and after 2023. Our findings reveal a significant but uneven shift toward the use of “Türkiye”.
