Abstract

The purpose of the work is to reproduce the specifics of the activities of Fedir Shevchenko, the nephew of the Taras Shevchenko and one of the most active organizers of national educational work in the Ukrainian prisoner-of-war camp in Freistadt (Austria-Hungary) in 1915–1918, as well as to study his life path based on the analysis of materials from the СDAVO of Ukraine archive and the Slavonic Library in Prague in order to personalize the collective portrait of Ukrainian prisoners. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, scientificity, and systematicity. The authors used general scientific (analysis, synthesis, generalization), special historical (historical-critical, problem-chronological) and source-study (archival heuristics, external and internal criticism of sources) methods. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the introduction into scientific circulation of letters of the former prisoner Ivan Moroz – a close friend of F. Shevchenko, who was released from the Freistadt camp through the efforts of the leading figure of the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine (SVU) A. Zhuk. The correspondence was discovered in the collections of the Slavonic Library in Prague. The prospects for further research lie in updating documents containing information about various aspects of the activities of the Ukrainian organization in the Freistadt camp, as well as revealing the characteristic of the stay abroad of that category of Ukrainians who did not consider it possible for themselves to return to Soviet Ukraine, despite the fact that their families were waiting for them there. Conclusions. F. Shevchenko throughout his stay in the camp was one of the leading organizers of cultural, educational and national-patriotic activities in Freistadt. Largely, it was thanks to his activities that it became possible to continue national-organizational work in the camp from winter till summer of 1918, thanks to which this camp remained the main base for the formation of the "Greycoat" division.
