Abstract

Th e purpose is to deny the usage of the term New Sich as an artifi cial construct proposed by Russian historiography to denote the location of the Zaporozhian Cossack Kish on the Pidpilna River in 1734—1775. Th e methodology is based on the principles of historicism and impartiality, using general scientifi c methods of analysis, synthesis, generalization, and special historical methods: historical-genetic, prosopographic, and problematic-chronological. Scientifi c novelty. For the fi rst time, the origins and application of the name New Sich to the Cossack stronghold on the Dnipro River in the 18th century are highlighted. Conclusions. Th e available sources and historiographical achievements allow us to trace the genesis of the imperial term, which was never used among the Zaporozhian Cossacks. Accordingly, this foreign narrative should disappear from Ukrainian history forever, and the name Pidpilnenska Sich should be returned to national historiography when referring to the location of the last Cossack Kish in Zaporozhzhia.
