Анотація
The article examines neologisms as linguistic phenomena that emerge in response to cultural, technological, and social changes. It outlines the key theoretical approaches to studying neologisms, focusing on the ideas of P. Newmark, J. Aitchison, and P. Durkin. The paper emphasizes that neologisms can take the form of entirely new words, existing lexemes with new meanings, or borrowings from other languages. The study highlights major trends in neologism formation, including the influence of scientific and technological progress (metaverse, deepfake, smartphone), sociocultural shifts (cancel culture, wokeness, mansplaining), blending (hangry), borrowing (emoji, café), and semantic shift (cloud, troll). The author notes that the perception of neologisms varies depending on speakers’ linguistic competence, cultural context, and personal experience. Understanding neologisms, therefore, provides valuable insight into the dynamics of modern language development and its interaction with social evolution.
