Abstract
Language is always a social choice. We make choices every day about how to speak, and these choices depend on age, context, and audience. In Japanese culture, these differences are especially noticeable, since society is built on a clear hierarchy. However, that is precisely the value: by learning Japanese, we learn to understand how age shapes language, and vice versa - how language shapes the image of a generation.
