Анотація

This research studies how the media describe children from European royal families and how gender influences this portrayal. The main aim is to show how boys and girls are presented differently in English-language media. The object of the research is the media image of royal children. The subject is the gender-specific features of their verbal portraits. The study uses materials from 50 media texts. They include articles and reports from British and American newspapers and websites such as The New York Times, The Sun, The Wall Street Journal, and others. Half of the texts are about royal girls (princesses), and half are about royal boys (princes). The methods include critical discourse analysis and comparative analysis. Critical discourse analysis helps reveal hidden meanings and gender stereotypes in the texts. Comparative analysis is used to compare descriptions of boys and girls and find out what is different or similar in how they are presented. The study shows that verbal portraits of girls often focus on appearance, clothing, elegance, and emotions. Words like "elegant," "stylish," or "beautiful" appear frequently. Girls are also described in terms of their behaviour in public and their roles as daughters or future queens. Boys, on the other hand, are more often described through their actions, strength, bravery, and leadership qualities. Media texts about boys often mention responsibility, courage, and future roles in society. The research confirms that traditional gender stereotypes are still common in media portrayals. However, some examples show change, such as girls shown as confident speakers or future leaders. The study helps to understand how language builds gender images and supports or challenges social norms.
