Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the typology of traveler-heroes in contemporary Ukrainian prose of the early 21st century. Travel prose is conceptualized as a form of interaction between the individual and space, culture, memory, and identity, reflecting profound shifts in the cultural paradigm. The study identifies new types of travelers – hitchhiker, flashpacker, stalker, volunteer, backpacker, Instagram-traveler, flâneur, digital nomad, slow traveler, pilgrim, and others. Their functions are linked to war, trauma, migration, ecological crisis, and hypermobility, while the travelers themselves emerge in the process of searching for and reinterpreting identity. The theoretical framework is based on the concepts of Erik Cohen, John Crompton, Pearce and Lee, Stanley Plog, and Zygmunt Bauman, which allow for an understanding of how the place of the traveler in the cultural narrative is being reshaped. The methodological basis combines general scientific approaches, as well as psychological and hermeneutic methods. Journeys in the prose of Artem Chapai, Leonid Kanter, Bohdan Pankevych, Irena Karpa, Max Kidruk, Markiyan Kamysh, Yurii Andrukhovych, Iren Rozdobudko, Oleksandr Drobakha, and Oleksandr Havrosh fulfill various functions: escape, trauma therapy, memory reconstruction, intercultural dialogue, and self-discovery. Illustrative examples include Serhiy Zhadan’s The Orphanage, where the road through the frontline zone becomes an existential awakening, and Tanja Maljartschuk’s Oblivion, where the protagonist travels through memory and texts in search of national identity. Thus, contemporary Ukrainian prose emerges as a laboratory of new images of the traveler and narrative strategies that reflect the transformation of the individual and society in a globalized world.
