Abstract

The emergence of new words in a language is a permanent process. Its course in different periods of Korean language history varies. At the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, the lexico-semantic system of the Korean language was enriched with a large number of various innovations. One of the bright indicators of innovation is neologisms – new words and expressions that arise in the language under the influence of new realities. Neologisms in the Korean language are no exception, as they are a result of active reactions to social, cultural, political, and technological changes, creating a rich layer of new lexical units. The article provides criteria for classifying the meanings of neologisms. It is important to take into account the factors that influence their generation within the language: linguistic and extralinguistic. The article also provides examples of new trends introduced by the National Institute of the Korean Language in «Urimalsem» dictionary. The article examines the features of neologisms in the Korean language: almost all neologisms combine extralinguistic and linguistic factors, but the dominant factor is usually extralinguistic, while the linguistic factor only adjusts the vocabulary according to certain linguistic norms to fit the society in which the vocabulary and language function. The article presents an analysis of the most frequent and significant neologisms for society in recent years. The analysis includes an analysis of the origins of these neologisms, their semantic component, and also describes the social processes under which such neologisms emerged and serve as a characteristic marker of. It is important to understand the social and linguistic challenges posed by new lexical items. The article also emphasizes that neologisms related to the Korean wave Hallyu (한류) are a purely Korean phenomenon. Moreover, some neologisms, for which the extralinguistic factor of emergence is Hallyu (the Korean wave), have been officially included in the Oxford Dictionary.
