Abstract
Food is an integral part of every culture, contributing to the understanding of self-identity. The purpose of the work is to analyze the linguistic phenomena of phrases, phraseological units, comparative phrases and metaphors, to identify their main characteristics and role in communication. Other aimes in this work are to understand the role of food as a key component of the culture of the people, as well as the analysis of culinary language units using the example of two authentic German-language novels and conducting an empirical study on the issue of relevance and relevance of culinary units. The work departs from the often-used comparative approach in the study of culinary units and focuses on structural and semantic methods. The main materials were theoretical works of Donalies, Burger, Fleischer and others; the Duden dictionary of idioms as well as online sources such as Redensarten-index, and two German novels „Winterkartoffelknödel” and “Dampfnudelblues”. The results of the study showed that culinary units found in the literature are mainly metaphors, and in terms of product distribution, sweets showed the greatest productivity. The survey results proved that although culinary idioms are perceived as important linguistic units, their use in various communicative situations is limited.
