Abstract

The bachelor's thesis "Gamification of News: How Games and Interactive Elements Change News Consumption" addresses the profound transformations in the modern media landscape. The relevance of the study is driven by the rapid development of digital technologies and evolving news consumption habits, leading to information overload and a shrinking audience attention span. In this context, gamification and interactive elements are considered innovative strategies that transform passive news consumption into active and engaging interaction, representing not just entertainment but a necessity for media organizations' survival in the "attention economy". This shift redefines the very nature of journalism, where success is measured not only by accuracy but also by the ability to foster active audience participation. The research aims to study the impact of gamification and interactive elements on news consumption, analyze their mechanisms, benefits, and risks for both media and audience, and determine their future prospects in modern journalism. To achieve this goal, a series of objectives were set, including exploring the theoretical foundations of gamification and interactivity, analyzing key news consumption models in the digital age, reviewing the current state of scholarly development, defining analytical methodologies, conducting practical case studies of Ukrainian and international media, assessing the impact on engagement and perception, and identifying advantages and potential risks. The object of study is the process of news consumption in modern media, with the subject being the influence of gamification and interactive elements on this process. The methodological framework of the work includes literature analysis, content analysis, comparative analysis, a systemic approach, generalization, and systematization. Such a multi-methodological approach ensures the validity and reliability of the results in a rapidly changing field, allowing for a transition from descriptive to explanatory research. The scientific novelty lies in conducting a comprehensive analysis of gamification's impact on news consumption specifically within the Ukrainian media context, integrating international experience to identify specific trends and fill existing research gaps. The practical value of the results lies in their potential use by journalists, media companies, and content developers to create more effective news products, enhance media literacy, and develop new audience interaction strategies. The study found that gamification and interactive elements represent an irreversible trend, offering powerful opportunities for audience engagement, improved information comprehension, and the formation of consistent news consumption habits. At the same time, their application carries significant risks, including superficial engagement, alienation of some audience segments, brand dilution, and ethical concerns related to potential manipulation and trivialization of serious content. The future of journalism is likely to involve a hybrid model, combining the strengths of traditional and digital media, where gamification and interactivity will play a crucial role in creating a more dynamic, engaging, and meaningful news experience.
