Abstract

The article attempts to outline the main features of the linguistic portrait of Borys Grinchenko as a prominent linguistic personality of the period of the formation of the modern Ukrainian nation. At the same time, the description (portrait) of the linguistic personality is not identified with the description of the language of the writer's literary works, but is drawn mainly on the basis of formal and informal communication through correspondence with friends and like-minded people. Research attention is concentrated on individual levels of the linguistic personality - lexical, morphological, word-formation. Special attention is paid to the orthographic features of the linguistic portrait, yet, this is a time in the history of the Ukrainian language when the formation of a single literary language and the search for spelling principles for it took place. The material for the study was more than two hundred of Borys Grinchenko's egodocuments, dated 1883, 1884 and partly 1885 – the time of his work as a teacher in the Slobozhanshchyna. For their scientific understanding and complete study of the linguistic personality, the methodology of epistemology and linguopersonality was applied. This made it possible to represent a separate linguistic individuality in all its broader manifestations – temporal, spatial, evolutionary, cultural and aesthetic, social, linguocultural, etc. The results of the study distinguish between linguoindividuation (Borys Grinchenko’s spontaneous need to be realized in and through language) and linguoindividualization (Borys Grinchenko’s conscious desire to acquire linguistic independence, cognizableness, and skill in operating linguistic means). The conclusion postulates the idea that outstanding linguistic personalities establish linguistic priorities and produce linguistic values in the linguistic collective, and the linguistic personality of Borys Grinchenko can be compared in functional status with the personalities of Ivan Kotlyarevsky, Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko and other classic reformers of the Ukrainian-speaking space of our past.
