Abstract

The article presents the results of an empirical study on the problems of functioning of the social services system for families raising children living with HIV. The study was conducted in 2024 involving 12 families (in-depth interviews with parents/guardians), medical professionals (expert interviews), and social workers (focus group). Systemic problems of interdisciplinary interaction were identified, including: absence or insufficient number of psychologists and social workers in medical institutions; ineffective pre-test information and post-test counseling; a gap in social support after establishing the child's HIV status; barriers to systematic interaction with child protection services due to the prohibition of HIV status disclosure. The absence of specialized social services for families with HIV-positive children and limitations in the application of legal mechanisms for responding to cases of antiretroviral therapy refusal were analyzed. The necessity of implementing a comprehensive specialized social service of social support for families raising children living with HIV was substantiated. Recommendations were proposed for improving legal mechanisms of interaction between medical institutions and social services regarding responses to difficult life circumstances of families with an HIV-positive child.
