Abstract
The master’s thesis theoretically substantiates and experimentally verifies the pedagogical conditions for the formation of fourth-grade pupils’ skills to control voice and breathing during expressive reading of literary texts. The essence of the key concepts and terms of the research is revealed, and the main approaches to the development of speech techniques in primary school students are characterized. The study summarizes the experience of Ukrainian educators and the current requirements of the New Ukrainian School. The research defines the components, criteria, indicators, and levels of development of pupils’ skills in voice and breathing control. A pedagogical toolkit has been designed and implemented, which includes a system of breathing, vocal, diction, and intonation exercises adapted to the age and physiological capabilities of primary school children. The pedagogical experiment conducted in four educational institutions of Kyiv confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed system: a significant increase in the level of the studied skills, improvement of reading competence, and growth of pupils’ motivation for expressive reading were recorded.
