Abstract

The article outlines theoretical and applied aspects for forming mathematical competence in subjects of the educational process, notably senior class students of lyceums and students of Ukrainian philology in the course of studying phonetics of the Ukrainian language as a branch of linguistic science. It is acknowledged that the implementation of the competence paradigm at different stages of language education, namely, in lyceums and pedagogical institutions of higher education, in the context of the tasks of the New Ukrainian school determines the analysis and generalization of achievements of modern Ukrainian linguodidactics, as well as the search for efficient approaches, principles, methods and techniques for forming mathematical competence in students in the course of studying phonetics of the Ukrainian language. Fundamental reform of modern Ukrainian education both in terms of content and linguodidactic conditions for organizing the educational process according to the requirements of the New Ukrainian School, is defined in the State Standard on linguistic and literary education in the following wording: development of competent speakers and readers with a humanistic worldview, who speak the Ukrainian language, read information texts and fiction, in particular classical and modern ones (Ukrainian and foreign), the ability to communicate in the languages of indigenous peoples and national minorities, and foreign languages for spiritual, cultural and national expression and intercultural dialogue, for enrichment of emotional and sensory experience, creative self-actualization and forming value-oriented benchmarks and attitudes. The aforementioned enables scientists to further substantiate and develop theoretical and applied foundations for the formation of mathematical competence as one of the most important key competencies in students. The article specifies that, in the current regulatory documents (the State Standard of Basic Secondary Education, the concept of the New Ukrainian school) mathematical competence of students is defined as mathematical skills acquired through knowledge in the learning process. The aforementioned skills provide students with a unique ability to master the Ukrainian language by means of logical, algorithmic, and critical thinking for due application thereof in various life circumstances. In this article, in view of the content, structure and functions of mathematical competence regarded as a definition, the theoretical and applied aspects of teaching phonetics as a fundamental part of the course in Modern Ukrainian literary language is substantiated. It addresses the stages of cognition, requirements for the inherent logic of learning, establishing associative links between phonetic processes and phenomena that contribute to the strength of knowledge, delving into the internal and external systems of the language within the scope of achievements of modern linguistics and methods of teaching the Ukrainian language. The consideration of theoretical material is envisaged in the content of tasks and exercises, that include controversial issues, construing content characteristics of linguistic terms using generalizing tables, diagrams, verbal keys, as well as conducting language experiments focused on the development of students’ critical thinking, the production of logical reasoning, judgments, hypothetical assumptions, and the development of individual communication strategies for the formation of mathematical competence as a universal general one in students.
