Abstract

Purpose. This article examines the development of coherent speech skills under crisis conditions as a core component of a translator’s professional competence. The study provides a theoretical justification and empirical verification of the role of anticipation, speech compression, and discourse marker automation in maintaining coherence and continuity of interpreting under extreme time pressure and heightened cognitive and emotional load. Methods. The research integrates a theoretical analysis of translation studies, psycholinguistics, and cognitive science – specifically focusing on probabilistic forecasting and cognitive resource allocation – with the synthesis of pedagogical practices in interpreter training. To test the working hypothesis, a training methodology was developed based on Gile’s Effort Model, supplemented by cognitive exercises targeting predictive processing. The study employed scenario-based modelling of crisis communication, stress simulations, and a comparative analysis of student interpretations, using established cohesion and coherence metrics. Results. The findings demonstrate that anticipation functions as a cognitive filter ensuring stylistic fluency and logical continuity of speech, thereby preventing discourse fragmentation under stress. Speech compression – syntactic, lexical, and semantic – was shown to preserve semantic integrity by simplifying formal grammatical structures. Furthermore, automation of discourse markers significantly mitigates cognitive load during syntactic planning sustaining speech flow even when the source message is fragmented. Conclusions. The study concludes that coherent speech skills in crisis conditions should be conceptualized as an integrated cognitive-discursive component of professional competence. These skills are to be systematically incorporated into interpreter education curricula to prepare practitioners for high-stakes environments.
