Abstract

The article is devoted to the linguistic analysis of the German legal language as a language used for professional purposes. In particular it highlights the morphological and syntactic features of legal texts, analyses the structure of compound nouns and their translation into Ukrainian, considers the main types of shortenings and borrowings, and points out the gender aspect in legal texts. The German legal language belongs to the official business style, which is distinguished by the use of special terms, clarity, accuracy and standardization but also by sophisticated syntactic constructions that are often incomprehensible to non professionals. The article analyzes the means of implementing the nominal/noun style characteristic of the German legal language: the predominance of noun groups in legal texts, the presence of a significant number of nouns joined together by the genitive case or prepositions, and the use of a large number of compound nouns. Among the features of the nominal style is the presence of extended definitions and nouns with prepositions instead of subordinate clauses, which demonstrate the law of linguistic economy in legal texts. The predominance of passive verb forms in legal texts, which is generally characteristic of professional languages, is also noted. The extensive use of abbreviations in the titles of laws and courts and in the citations of legal items; the use of Latin phraseology and the use of nouns to denote professions or types of human activity predominantly in the masculine gender are considered specific characteristics of the German legal language. The authors analyse the texts of the Civil Code and note high frequency of complex syntactic construction ns, in particular subordinate attributive and conditional clauses, as well as the presence the prepositions pertinent exclusively to legal sphere, which are not used in literary texts or every day speech. The article will be of interest not only to philologists but also to students of law, specialists in law, international law, public communications and world politics.
