Abstract

The article provides a theoretical interpretation of the specifics of implementing a student-centered approach within higher artistic education, with particular emphasis on the directorial component of vocal training as an important factor in the formation of professional competence of future performers. The pedagogical foundations of student-centeredness are considered as a contemporary educational paradigm that presupposes an active subject position of the learner, partnership-based interaction between student and teacher, and an increased level of responsibility for the outcomes of one’s own educational and creative activity. The specific features of vocal education are analyzed as an integral musical and stage-oriented process that involves the integration of vocal-technical, interpretive, and directorial components ensuring the creation of a convincing stage image. The possibilities of students’ creative freedom in working on musical material and stage realization are outlined, as well as its boundaries determined by educational standards, dramaturgical logic, and professional criteria of performing mastery. The directorial and pedagogical responsibility of the teacher is identified as a central component of the professional training of vocalists, encompassing guidance of students’ creative search, development of artistic thinking, assurance of performance quality, and fostering the ability for independent artistic decision-making. The article examines pedagogical challenges and risks related to the implementation of the student-centered approach in directorial and vocal practice, including the risk of interpreting freedom as the absence of requirements or responsibility, and the complexity of assessing creative outcomes. Approaches are proposed for combining creative freedom with professional rigor, systemic organization of the educational process, and preservation of artistic standards. The article is intended for scholars, educators, and practitioners in the fields of artistic pedagogy, vocal education, and educational program management who are interested in effective models for training contemporary vocal performers.
