Abstract

The article deals with the problem of the development of general competencies of students within the course of the English language teaching process during their professional training. The authors emphasize the advisability and necessity of the development of students’ general competencies using the English language. Thus, they define the conditions for the efficient development of general competencies of the students of non-philological specialities while studying the English language and culture. The article suggests encouraging students for active cognitive and searching activities in relation to education and cultural level of the tutor. It is pointed out that it is necessary for the tutor to present illustrations of the direct connection between a personality education and the development of his or her critical thinking, the need for the discussion of some problematic and communicative situations that stimulate critical thinking. The article emphasizes the importance of analyzing issues and situations connected with civil competency from the perspective of English speaking countries and their culture, democratic and liberal traditions and values, their political systems peculiarities. The authors substantiate the idea of using topics and materials leading to the reflection and active discussion of essential gender issues. It is emphasized that it is advisable to enlarge and alter the recommended circle of printed and digital resources in favour of respectable international English language publications, especially those including credible and accurate information; the authors define the thesis about the use of group activities with the view of the development cooperative skills in students alongside with English language communication. Lastly, active employment of the mother tongue is substantiated, i.e. in explanation, introduction of vocabulary of profession, translation exercises and with the aim of professional terminology translation; therefore it is recommended for all participants of the communication process to use contemporary and stylistically correct Ukrainian language, observe its linguistic and communicative culture.
