Abstract

The paper covers the results of a study of the peculiarities of Kyiv's musical life in the second half of the 1950s – early 1960s, during the Khrushchev «thaw». The study was conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the conditionality and dynamics of the cultural processes of that time in line with the political changes of the era, which influenced the further development of Ukrainian musical culture. Drawing on the works of domestic scientists and archival sources from the collection of the Ukrainian opera and chamber singer Zoia Haidai, it was established that the partial liberalization of socio-political life during the Khrushchev «thaw» contributed to the revival and diversification of musical life in Soviet-occupied Ukraine and its capital Kyiv. This was manifested in the increased creative activity of Ukrainian musicians on the international stage and concert tours by foreign artists to our country. At the same time, the repertoire offered to the Kyiv public was carefully analyzed, determining its artistic value, and the significance of the demonstrated musical material for the development of professional skills of domestic performers. Opinions on the technical and performing level of foreign guest performers were shared by Ukrainian artist Zoia Haidai, who attended many of their concerts and left professional reviews, mostly filled with positive emotions, on the programs. The study also revealed the lack of works by Ukrainian composers in the programs of foreign performers, while there was a large amount of stylistically diverse material by representatives of other national composer schools, including Russian. This fact testifies to the implementation of the policy of Russification even during the Khrushchev «thaw», promoting a propaganda narrative – particularly to the West – regarding the «great» Russian culture dominant in the USSR. Consequently, the lack of information abroad about the achievements of Ukrainian musical figures ultimately shaped its status and patterns of further development.
