Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the typology of women’s jewellery in the collection of the State Museum of Applied Arts in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) through the study of their forms, functions, and regional characteristics. The methodology is based on an interdisciplinary approach, within which historical-cultural, art-historical, typological, comparative, iconographic, and contextual methods were applied. An analytical method was employed to classify museum exhibits based on morphological and functional characteristics, while a cross-cultural approach enabled the tracing of mutual influences between the artistic traditions of Central Asia's peoples within the context of historical contacts along the Great Silk Road. The results. A study of women’s jewelry from the collection of the State Museum of Applied Arts of Uzbekistan in Tashkent has demonstrated its exceptional value as a comprehensive historical and artistic source, reflecting the multi-layered nature of traditional Central Asian jewelry art from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. As a result of typological analysis, a complex system of jewelry was identified, structured according to body location (head, ear, temple, chest, waist, and hand), functional purpose (decorative, status-related, utilitarian, and apotropaic), and regional characteristics. The novelty. To date, there are no comprehensive scholarly studies devoted to a comprehensive art-historical analysis of women’s jewelry from the collection of the State Museum of Applied Arts of Uzbekistan in Tashkent. Existing publications are largely limited to general descriptions of traditional jewelry or popular overviews of museum collections without a systematic typology of the items. This article presents the first classification of jewelry based on functional placement, structural features, and artistic-stylistic characteristics, and identifies the role of jewelry art in shaping the image of the traditional women’s costume. Additionally, a comparative analysis of the regional characteristics of jewelry from Tashkent, Bukhara, Samarkand, Khorezm, Karakalpakstan, and the Fergana Valley is conducted, taking into account technological and decorative differences. Practical significance. This study presents broad opportunities for further interdisciplinary research in the fields of art history, ethnology, and museology, focusing on an in-depth examination of Central Asian jewelry art as a complex cultural and historical system. A promising direction is the expansion of typological analysis by incorporating broader museum collections from both Uzbekistan and neighboring regions, which will allow for a more precise identification of regional schools and the discovery of internal patterns in the development of forms and ornamentation.
