Abstract

The article is devoted to the motifs of oriental carpets in the work of the Dutch artist Jan Vermeer of Delft (1632–1675). The legacy of the master of various creative stages of his activity, marked by the introduction of artistic textiles into pictorial works, is analyzed. A number of paintings by the said author, in which he turned to Anatolian (Turkish) and Persian carpets, are analyzed. The artist's works are considered: "The Procure", 1656, "The Sleeping Girl" and "Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window", both 1657, "The Interrupted Music Lesson", 1660–1661, "Young Woman with a Jug of Water" 1662, "Woman at the Virginal with a Man" ("Music Lesson") (1662–1664), "Concert" 1665–1666. The nature of the interest in carpets in the work of the master, whose parents were engaged in textiles and the sale of antiques all their lives, thanks to which Jan Vermeer learned from childhood to understand good quality carpets, including those of oriental origin. In addition, the issue of interest in oriental silk fabrics and textiles in the artist's family is revealed, given the trip of Jan's father, Rainier, to Amsterdam to study silk weaving, in particular the technique called "kaffa" (a type of silk fabric with a printed or woven pattern on a silk base with plain weave). It was found that from 1653 the artist was a member of the Guild of St. Luke, thanks to which he became a very famous painter of Delft, who could sign his works from that time on. However, during his lifetime he was better known as a connoisseur-expert who could distinguish fakes of Italian painting, since he was very well versed in it. Considering that Salvador Dali called Vermeer "Divine", the artist's legacy gained particular fame from the 20th century. It was found that the artist most often turned to motifs of Anatolian and Persian carpets in his work.
