Анотація
This master’s thesis provides an in-depth stylistic investigation of Erich Maria Remarque’s late masterpiece, The Night in Lisbon, published in 1962. Positioned at the intersection of late ``Exilliteratur`` and post-war reflection, the novel serves as a profound case study in how linguistic form and narrative architecture can encapsulate the trauma of displacement and the erosion of human identity. The primary objective of this research is to deconstruct the specific rhetorical and syntactical mechanisms Remarque employs to render the harrowing atmosphere of Europe on the eve of the Second World War. Central to this analysis is the novel’s sophisticated frame narrative, which establishes a confessional, almost claustrophobic intimacy between the narrator and the mysterious Schwarz. This study argues that the nocturnal setting is not merely a backdrop but a stylistic catalyst that enhances the urgency of the prose, mirroring the "shadow existence" of those living without legal status. Furthermore, the thesis examines Remarque’s characteristic ``laconism``, defined by a paratactic sentence structure and a sober diction that eschews sentimentalism for stark, documentary realism.
