Анотація

The present paper investigates the rhetoric and syntactic particularities of Donald Trump’s discourse in the interview with the ABC News, The First 100 Days: The Interview in the Oval Office. The analysis reveals that the apparent structural simplicity and unadorned vocabulary function as a carefully calibrated political instrument, offering telltale features of the speaker’s persona. His discourse features simple vocabulary and instances of inaccurate or unconventional grammar. This lack of encyclopedic knowledge or adherence to formal political language creates a perception dissonance where the audience must reconcile the speaker’s political role and his linguistic informality. The speaker projects himself as a strong, self-assured individualist with a pronounced polarization along the in-group / out-group axis, showing little attention to alternative or dissenting opinion. He is active, determined but intends to withdraw himself from failures, shifting responsibility to others. His anti-elitism and populist ideology stand in conflict with his intention to be connected with historical ‘overachievers’. His own place is wherever he is currently situated. Absence of any reference to his family circle or private domestic space in these location markers. He casts himself as a Rescuer whose mission is to save America from external threats. Activity: Functions as a politician. Communicative strategy: persuasion. Discourse practice: Focuses on isolationist inner American politics agenda. Myth-reality correlation: Characterized by being controversial and unspecified, unsubstantiated beliefs and biased convictions. Overall rhetorical aim: To persuade the audience that he and only he is capable of sorting out problems, regardless of their kind or nature. Leadership type: 1) core orientation: individualist, national, populist, man of action; 2) role and narrative: narrator, messiah; 3) ideologically Trump is a blend of pragmatic, ideological and idealistic leader.
