Анотація

This article explores the continuity of Ivan Franko's literary tradition in Vasyl Stefanyk's short fiction through the transformation of Franko's artistic model of the human being. The relevance of the study lies in the need to re-evaluate the works of Franko and Stefanyk from the perspective of literary anthropology, to situate this issue within a broader European scholarly context, and to reconsider Stefanyk's place as a modern writer. The article aims to identify the principal direction of the transformation of Franko's artistic model of the human being in Vasyl Stefanyk's short fiction. To achieve this goal, the study examines the distinctive features of Franko's artistic model of the human being, and selected works of short fiction by both writers. The comparative analysis focuses on Ivan Franko's Lesyshyn's Servants, At the Bottom, and It's My Own Fault, alongside Vasyl Stefanyk's The News, The Stone Cross, Sons. Based on a comparative analysis of these works, the study traces the transformation of key anthropological dimensions: voice and silence; the liminal space of existence; guilt and responsibility. The proposed approach makes it possible to interpret the Franko–Stefanyk tradition not merely as a set of literary influences or thematic parallels, but as a transformation of the artistic model of the human being. The analysis demonstrates that Stefanyk further develops motifs first articulated in Franko's prose, including the individual deformed by violence, intergenerational trauma, the loss of agency, the crisis of speech, and human existence within a repressive family structure. The findings suggest that Stefanyk continues Franko's literary tradition not through repetition but through creative transformation. Consequently, the transformation of Franko's artistic model of the human being in Stefanyk's short fiction represents a shift from psychological realism to existential anthropology. While Franko portrays the human being as still struggling against the world, Stefanyk depicts the human being as struggling with existence itself.
