This commentary responds to Ellegaard’s (2026) critical evaluation of bibliometric analysis, particularly his suggestion that some bibliometric studies may be more appropriately published as policy briefs, institutional reports, or working papers rather than in scholarly journals. While agreeing that the rapid growth of bibliometric publications has been accompanied by an increase in low-quality and purely descriptive studies, I argue that this problem should not be conflated with the scientific value of bibliometric research as a methodological tradition. Contemporary bibliometrics extends far beyond mapping the scholarly literature and contributes to the study of researcher mobility, scientific collaboration, open access, research integrity, science policy, and other aspects of science as a social institution. The bibliometric community has also developed methodological guidance, reporting recommendations, and evaluation frameworks aimed at improving the quality, transparency, and reproducibility of bibliometric research. The central challenge, therefore, is not the legitimacy of bibliometric studies as a scholarly genre, but the uneven adoption of quality standards across disciplines and journals.
