OBJECTIVES: This article examines the integration of the trauma-informed approach into the system of training and support for volunteers working in de-occupied territorial communities of Ukraine. THEORETICAL BASE: The empirical foundation derives from the results of focus group discussions with 48 volunteers from de-occupied communities in Mykolaiv Oblast (Oblast stands for the province in Ukrainian) and Kherson Oblast, which were engaged in: household assistance, support for social infrastructure, and provision of psychosocial assistance to vulnerable groups. METHODS: A qualitative focus group interview method was employed; semi-structured guide was applied, covering seven thematic blocks: motivation for volunteering, experience of interaction with beneficiaries, emotional challenges, training needs, attitudes toward TIA, ethical dilemmas, and expectations for preparation. OUTCOMES: The qualitative analysis identified five key thematic categories: (1) volunteers’ requests for knowledge and skills in crisis communication, psychological first aid, and burnout prevention; (2) emotional burden associated with beneficiaries’, volunteers’ own traumatic experiences; (3) interpersonal barriers; (4) need for supervision, facilitation of emotional release; (5) demand for hybrid training models adapted to de-occupied settings. SOCIAL WORK IMPLICATIONS: Proposes a model of volunteer support (short TIA trainings, debriefing, supervision sessions, mentoring, gamified learning, and role-playing simulations); practical planning tool for social workers, NGO coordinators, and local government representatives. The findings underscore the necessity of systematically integrating TIA into volunteer programmes.
