Abstract
The article analyzes the creation of the canon “people’s” image of T. Shevchenko, which was visualized in the art piece by Ivan Kramskiy “The portrait of the Ukrainian writer and painter, Taras Shevchenko” (1871). The destruction of the stagnant image – the mask of the “Kobzar”, the grim old man in a wool hat and winter coat, not only creates the opportunity to shed light on many other of his images and personifications, but also integrates Shevchenko into the modern life of Ukraine as a national poet.
