Abstract

To a large extent, the Japanese language is characterized by structural incompleteness of sentences. The differentiation of elliptical constructions is traditionally carried out according to the specifics of their syntactic environment, and for each selected type, the features of the lexical-grammatical system that supports the existence and functioning of such syntactic units are determined. Most often, noun phrases or their parts, parts of verb phrases, case markers and determinatives are ellipted. The question of the influence of ellipsis on the cohesion and coherence of text is debatable. Modern scientific and methodical literature, published in Japan, highlights the issue of cohesion and coherence, in particular, in connection with the implication of demonstrative pronouns, the problem of identifying the subject in sentences that have in the predicate forms of the passive, causative or causative-passive voice, as well as benefactive expressions. If we briefly summarize the preliminary information, then we can say that in writing, in general, almost everything that can be understood from the context is reduced, and this especially applies to thematic words and subjects of sentences, which determines the relevance of contextual analysis. Additional complications for the comprehension of implied elements are caused by spontaneous speech in the conditions of oral communication, which necessitates the search for effective methods of analysis of such material. It was established that at the level of reduction of noun phrases, ellipsis is successfully implemented in the Japanese language, and everything that can be explained at the expense of the context may be omitted without losing the content or reducing the quality of its perception, while similar structurally complete sentences, on the contrary, can become an obstacle to the comprehension. The tendency to reduce demonstrative pronouns, which serve as a means of anaphoric reference, is connected in Japanese speech with a desire for expressiveness, and the tendency to reduce a noun with a possessive case indicator, despite the normative necessity for this indicator, is a typical manifestation of possessive reduction, in the context of which special attention should be paid to the nouns expressing family ties, which have an indication of belonging in their semantics. Ellipsis of case markers can have not only a stylistic basis, but also a pragmatic character, since it shifts the emphasis to communicatively significant elements and seems to thematize them, and the existence of replacement ellipsis is due to the conciseness and dynamism of live conversational speech.
