Abstract

For a long time, it was considered that unagi-sentences are inferior from syntactic and semantic points of view, because their structure, at first glance, does not provide comprehensive information for the recipient and does not fall under an adequate syntactic scheme. However, it was later proven that unagi-sentences are neither inferior constructs nor the results of some hypothetical processes – today such sentences are considered to be completely self-sufficient statements. We have analyzed main approaches to the systematization and interpretation of specific syntactic constructions of the Japanese language unagi-sentences and identified key semantic and functional features of such constructions. We have proposed effective ways of their representation in the process of teaching Japanese as a foreign language, and also confirmed an optimal definition of the concept of unagi-sentence in order to form an objective comprehension about the array of these syntactic means for the learners. It was established, in particular, that: at the initial stage of learning Japanese, it is possible to give students an idea of unagi-sentences only in general terms, in the context of studying the basic syntactic structure AはBだ, but it is necessary to convey this idea from the very beginning of the educational course; the opportunity to systematically understand the problem of functioning for unagi-sentences in the Japanese language turns up only at the next stages of its study, since this issue requires a higher level of linguistic competence; the following definition appears to be valid for the entire spectrum of unagi-sentences and the most optimal for use in class: unagi-sentences are such constructions in which the predicate, which can be somehow explained from the context, is compensated by the copula; regardless of the stage of mastering the Japanese language, students need to be aware of the importance of the concepts of subject and predicate, as well as theme and rheme in the system of language and linguistics.
