Abstract
Abstract. The article reviews the peculiarities of academic success centers in US universities. In this regard, the concept of "student success" is analysed, and it is found that this concept is directly related to academic achievements. Centers that contribute to the improvement of educational achievements, created at institutions of higher education, are called Academic Success Centers. There is no single definition of the term "academic success center" in scientific discourse today. It is related to the academic autonomy of higher education institutions, which independently determine the range of services and support programs for students in such centers. A study of the practices of the best private and public universities in the United States showed that most of these institutions of higher education have centers of academic success in their structure. These structural divisions direct their activities, first of all, to providing academic support and maintaining the contingent of education seekers. It was found that tutoring, academic coaching and mentoring are the main technologies for supporting students' academic success. Special emphasis is placed on the interaction with students of the first year of studying (freshmen), who most often face a number of problems in a new academic environment for them. Centers for academic success provide an opportunity not only to learn, but also to teach. Seniors have the opportunity to become tutors, mentors and academic coaches. Career orientation work with applicants is a typical feature. Universities organize meetings of applicants with students, graduates, teachers and administration of the institution to provide complete information about admission, studies and further employment prospects. The conducted study actualised the need for a thorough study of the basic principles of the areas of activity of centers of academic success in US universities in order to introduce better experience into the educational practice of Ukrainian universities.
