Abstract

The article describes the results of the theoretical analysis of the experience of the Republic of Poland in the formation of sexuality education among Polish youth with special educational needs, in particular, with intellectual disability. The article presents the recommendations of Polish scholars on sex education for people with disabilities, outlines the main theoretical provisions for ensuring the psychosexual development of young people with intellectual disabilities through the use of effective strategies to improve the sex education of young people with special educational needs. The analysis of Polish experience shows that in Poland, sex education for young people with special educational needs is a necessary area of work with this category of children, but there is insufficient readiness of institutions to implement sex education programmes. Teachers and educators in rehabilitation and educational institutions are often not fully aware of their role in shaping sexuality in people with disabilities, which makes it necessary to develop and implement specialised sex education programmes that take into account the individual characteristics and needs of students with special educational needs. However, Poland as an EU country has positive developments in this area, and the study of Polish experience is useful for the development and implementation of domestic programmes to promote sexuality education for people with intellectual disabilities. The article describes the scientific research of Polish researchers who note that the most effective programmes are those that combine practical information about sexual safety with knowledge about abstinence and social norms. Attention is focused on the beliefs of special educators in the need to develop specialised programmes that take into account the results of research and observations of the psychosexual development of people with intellectual disabilities. An analysis of new regulations, including the 'Core Curriculum' for students with moderate or severe intellectual disabilities and the 2017 Resolution of the Ministry of National Education, confirms the importance of including sexuality education in the educational process, focusing on preparing students for the role of adults, knowledge about the development and changes of their own bodies, protection of intimacy and respect for the intimacy of others.
