Abstract

The article studies various exoticisms for food in the Ukrainian language of the first quarter of the 21st century. The study was conducted on the material of printed and electronic media and Internet discourse (social networks, forums, blogs, chats, guest books, search sites), since today, they act as a robust communicative environment in which new uncodified lexical units constantly arise and actively function. Among the latter, a significant corpus of specific foreign words – exoticisms, which result from the intensification of intercultural communication in the modern globalized world, has been identified. They contribute to the dynamics of the lexical-semantic system of the modern Ukrainian language. The main extra- and intralingual factors that contributed to the intensification of the emergence and functioning of the named lexemes are presented. The article analyzes exoticisms denoting food (over 150 words recorded from 2000-2024 in the above sources) from 25 world languages. The collected significant layer of illustrative material has shown that exoticisms denoting dishes and drinks, which today function in the Ukrainian-language media and Internet discourse, differ in their sources of origin, quantity, activity of use, etc. The above-mentioned group of new foreign words is quite broad; therefore, seven subgroups are distinguished in it. The process of deexoticization of some of the studied lexical units is also considered. The article emphasizes that the nominations of dishes and drinks contain a "food code", which, within the framework of a particular culture, is always nationally determined and caused by its ethnic characteristics. We predict that the diffusion of exoticisms into the Ukrainian language will continue to intensify. We see the further study of other groups of exotic vocabulary to denote everyday realities, buildings and their parts, culture and art, customs and rituals, religious realities and concepts, monetary units, etc., as promising.
