Abstract
One of the primary objectives of national postgraduate education is to facilitate continuous professional growth for teachers by providing high-quality educational services that address current challenges across various educational fields. Specifically, enhancing the professional competence of English language teachers should include the development of their mediation skills, which are essential for establishing effective intercultural communication. The purpose of this article is to identify effective factors in the process of developing teacher-mediator skills during postgraduate education. It introduces aspects of mediation as a teaching strategy in the context of foreign language instruction, while considering the main principles outlined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and recent scientific research. The article highlights the intersection of mediation and foreign language learning, describing key areas of mediation within the learning environment and the corresponding types of learning activities. It demonstrates that mediation involves reevaluating speech activities, shifting the focus from traditional forms of communication (reading, writing, speaking, listening) to a deeper understanding of the interaction between the speaker and the language, covering aspects such as reception, production, interaction, and mediation. Furthermore, the article outlines four primary models of communication. It classifies the types of mediation, providing examples of specific exercises aimed at enhancing these skills in the postgraduate training of foreign language teachers. It also establishes a link between various types and strategies of mediation in language teaching and the development of life competencies in individuals. Additionally, the article delineates the essential skills required of a mediator teacher and the types of educational activities necessary for in-service training. It emphasises the system of mediation descriptors recommended by the CEFR, which are crucial for assessing achievements in foreign language acquisition.
